Several of my pupils brought my attention to a conversation between Scottie Sheffler & Tiger Woods recently.
I watched Tiger Woods during the 1995 Walker Cup when Tiger was still an amateur. One of my pupils, Gary Wolstenholme was drawn against Tiger in the singles & Gary won the match by one hole.
On one particular shot, I stood about 10 yards directly behind Tiger & I focused on the ball. Tiger hit another magnificent shot & when he had walked off I looked for the divot.
Not a single blade of grass had been disturbed.
The golf ball is hit forward & the loft of the club sends the ball upwards.
Depending on the lie of the ball a divot can be necessary but it is certainly not essential.
Darren Clarke observed on a practice ground where Tiger had been practicing that there were no divots.
Please have in mind that the ball is hit forward with all clubs.
