I am still seeing new golfers of all categories and the lessons always start with general questions regarding ambitions, health, what other sports are played, and what is the main problem.
The answer to the last question is always the same. Lack of consistency.
My response is that no golfer will ever be consistent and before my new pupil becomes despondent I quickly say that I can make my new pupil more consistent but never truly consistent.
Golf is the most difficult game in the world because the ball is about 2″ in size, the club head is about 3″ wide, the club head has to travel up to 30′ prior to impact and the impact of the club on the ball lasts for half of 1,000th of one second ( 1/2 a millisecond ).
I tell all of my pupils that and it actually encourages all of them because they realise that it is inevitable that bad shots are part of the game.
The scores of professional golfers illustrate perfectly how true consistency is impossible.
In a recent Ladies European Tournament one lady scored 68 in the first round and 89 in the last round.
In another tournament, a lady scored 61 in the first round and 77 in the last round.
In a European Tour event, one man had an 80 in the third round and a 62 in the last round.
So I am afraid true consistency is impossible.
However if one addresses the ball correctly, 75% of the shot, makes a good first move, 85% of the shot, and continues on to a good back swing, 95% of the shot then more consistent shots will follow.
