I have been able to improve many thousands of golfers games by initially just talking to them and more importantly listening. Some of my pupils remark that I do not say a lot in my lessons and that is because I am listening to what they are saying. This allows me to understand how they perceive the game and in turn I can always help them to understand what they need to do to improve.
If you look at any of my Myths of Golf you will see there is a wealth of confusion and misunderstanding in the game and my very first task is to ensure my pupils do understand what is required of them to improve their game.
Above my desk in my studio is one of my favourite sayings by Albert Einstein.
The saying is ‘We cannot solve our problems with the same mindset that we used to create them’
This philosophy is absolutely correct. Imagine a golfer beleiving his or her head should remain still or the address postion and impact positions are the same.
If the same thinking processes are used to solve the problems that the thinking processes created in the first place then the golfer concerned becomes stuck in a circle with no way out.
My solution is simple. Change the thinking processes based on facts and not theories.
A very good example occurred in my studio quite recently when I asked my lady pupil what makes the ball go the distance it goes. The answer I received was the swing created the distance. I explained that it was the speed of the swing and not just the swing. The lady then used her normal swing but moved her body and therefore the club faster and the ball went 20 yards further. A valuable lesson had been learned as I had helped her to change her thinking process.
CONCLUSION
Everyone can improve their game by changing their concept and by basing their swings on facts and not Myths.
