Myths of Golf 38 – Golf is all in the mind.

Golf is not all in the mind. If it was every golfer who is reasonably fit would be able to play great golf. There are over 60,000,000 golfers in the world and their average score has been around 100 for 50 years. (National Golf Foundation) Peter will explain how you can improve your golf by improving technique.

Myths of Golf 37 – Putting – Instant top spin will produce a pure roll.

A golf ball when struck correctly with a putter will skid for up to 20% of the total distance of the putt and then it will start to roll.  Any attempt to produce instant top spin will be disastrous.

Myths of Golf 36 – Hold the club loosely.

Would you hold a hammer loosely whilst driving a nail into a piece of wood? Would you hold the steering wheel of a car loosely whilst cornering at speed?  The answer to both of these questions is probably no so why hold a club loosely when the club head can be travelling over 140 mph. at impact. This myth can cause wayward shots as the golfer is not in control of the golf club.

Myths of Golf 35 – A flat left wrist at the top of the back swing means the club face is square.

A flat left wrist at the top of the back swing may, quite possibly , lead to a square club face but it is a myth that creates for most golfers a hook or a push. I will explain why and how this happens and where your left wrist should really be at the top of the back swing.

Myths of Golf 34 – Develop a late hit.

Who on earth wants a late hit?  With a late hit the golf ball will almost certainly fly to the right of the target resulting in lots of flapping around with the wrists AFTER the ball has gone. I will prove how damaging this myth really is.

Myths of Golf 33 – The wrists hinge automatically in the back swing.

Yes, for some golfers, the wrists will hinge automatically in the back swing but for the majority of golfers they will not. I will explain how this myth can lead to a significant loss of distance.

Myths of Golf 32 – Turn your back to the target in the back swing.

I will prove that this myth is almost impossible to achieve and can result in physical injury and a very poor swing.

Myths of Golf 31 – Keep your right knee still in the back swing.

In the back swing the hips and shoulders are turning so attempting to keep the right knee still can create physical problems and poor shots. We are all different shapes so how much the right knee straightens, if at all, in the back swing depends on each person.

Myths of Golf 30 – Sand bunker shots need a different swing.

Sand bunker shots need the same basic swing that is used for all shots with subtle variations. When the golfer understands this the sand bunker shots will improve immediately. Sandy Lyle won the Masters in 1988. He hit a full shot with his 7 iron out of a bunker on the 72nd. hole on to the green and he holed the putt  for a three. He used his normal swing and did not touch a grain of sand with the club head.

Myths of Golf 29 – Chip shots need a different swing.

Chip shots need the same swing that is used for full shots with subtle changes.  When the golfer understands this then the chip shots will improve immediately.

Myths of Golf 28 – Pitch shots need a different swing.

Pitch shots need the same basic swing that is used for full shots with subtle changes. When the golfer understands this the pitch shots will improve immediately.

Myths of Golf 27 – Create a wider arc.

It is physically impossible to create a wider arc but it can however become narrower. The best one can do is to maintain the arc. I will show you how. It really is very simple.

Myths of Golf 26 – Turn your shoulders and resist with the hips.

The shoulder turn will always be  greater than the hip turn in any ones swing. This has absolutely nothing to do with resisting with the hips. It is all to do with your only contact with the ground – your feet.

Myths of Golf 25 – Coil and uncoil.

Your body is not a spring and cannot possibly coil like one. I will explain why you should not attempt to have a coil as it can be be very bad for your body and could even result in injuries.

Myths of Golf 24 – The swing is a circle.

I will show you many brilliant golf swings and prove that a good golf swing is not  and never will be a circle.

Myths of Golf 23 – A longer back swing makes the ball go farther.

The longer the back swing the longer the shot Wrong Wrong Wrong. I will use one of my pupils to illustrate how the shaft angle at the top of the back swing was reduced by 35 degrees and the shots went over 20 yards farther.

Myths of Golf 22 – The ball lifts because the club head goes underneath the ball.

I have made hundreds of golfers improve their golf immediately by dismissing this onerous myth. The golf ball is hit forward and the loft of the club sends the ball upwards.

Myths of Golf 21 – Putting – Straight back and straight through.

Taking the putter head straight back and straight through sounds great but I will prove that it  can be a very damaging myth.

Myths of Golf 20 – Putting – Rock with the shoulders.

If you rock your shoulders the putter head will move immediately away from the ground as it moves back and then immediately away from the ground after the ball has been struck. I will show you how good golfers putt rather than the mythical rocking of the shoulders.

Myths of Golf 19 – Putting – Wait for the plop as the ball goes into the hole.

I will show you some of golfs best putters, past and present, looking at the hole as the ball drops into the hole and why they do it.

Myths of Golf 18 – Hit against a firm left side.

Hitting against a firm left side means the left side has stopped moving. I will show you many golfers including the world’s greatest ever golfer, Jack Nicklaus, winner of 18 major championships, hitting the ball with his left side flexed . Freeing your swing from this myth will produce more consistent shots and it will be kinder to your knees, hips and back and very beneficial to your overall game.

Myths of Golf 17 – Transfer your weight to the right side in the back swing.

Consciously transferring your weight to your right side in the back swing is a myth. In a good back swing the weight is automatically transferred to the  inside of the right heel  but you should not attempt to do it. I will show you some superb golfers who move their weight to the inside of  the right heel in the back swing without attempting to do so.

Myths of Golf 16 – Take the club head back low to the ground.

Taking the club head back low to the ground is a myth that I will comprehensively destroy with some great analysis of the swings of some of the best golfers in the world. In a good back swing the club head can move up to 10′ from the ground so why would you want to keep it low to the ground?  The advice on this video will allow you to hit the ball much further, straighter and more consistently.

Myths of Golf 15 – Take the club head back in a straight line.

Taking the club head back in a straight line is a myth that causes immense complications and is actually physically impossible. I will show you how the best golfers in the world actually move the club head back.
